These are fun and tasty Christmas treats. They are made from layers of dough or puff pastry (shop bought is just fine) and a sweet or savoury filling. The tree is a bit easier to twist than the star so we suggest you start with that shape. If you have any leftover pastry/dough and filling you can make pinwheels.
All these shapes can be glazed with egg or egg yolk for a golden finish.
Christmas Trees
This Riverford recipe uses puff pastry and has a savoury spinach and feta filling, with cherry tomatos for the ‘lights’. You could also use dough layers (see recipe in savoury star below) and either of the star fillings below (or make your own up!). The twisting technique is demonstrated in this video.
Christmas Stars
Sweet Christmas Star – this recipe uses nutella mixed with tahini (sesame paste – like peanut butter but made from sesame seeds). You can subsitute with a combination of any of the following: dates, figs, mincemeat, cranberry sauce, tahini, honey and coco powder.
Savoury Christmas Star – with a tasty olive/sundried tomato based filling.
Here is a video that explains the technique which is used for the star. You can chose whether to have 3 or 4 layers (there are 3 layers in the video) If you’re using puff pastry just ignore the dough bit at the beginning.
