Traditional Apple Crumble

This classic recipe works well with cooking or eating apples and also pears. Peeling is optional, especially if fruit is organic or grown at home without pesticides.

Ingredients (serves 6)

300g (1/2 cup) plain flour
175g  (1/4 cup) butter (cubed)
175g (1/4 cup) sugar (brown or white)
25g (1/4 cup) oats (optional)
Handful of finely chopped apricots and nuts or seeds (optional)

Approx 450g chopped apple
50g sugar (if using cooking apples)
1 pinch cinnamon

Method:

  1. Peel and chop apples. Sprinkle over, a small amount of sugar if you are using cooking apples. Place in a cooking dish
  2. To make the crumble topping measure flour and butter and sugar into a bowl. Rub it all together with your fingertips until it looks like breadcrumbs.
  3. Stir in the oats, apricots and nuts/seeds if using.
  4. Sprinkle crumble topping over the apples.
  5. Bake for 30 mins at 160C (Gas 4).
